Registration for the After School Program at Burr School, Haddam Elementary School, and Killingworth Elementary School is now open for the 2010-2011 school year. The Program provides care for children in Kindergarten through 6th grades. The program is designed to accommodate any children who are physically handicapped, providing they normally ride school buses.

The program operates daily 2:45 - 6:00 pm (KES, BES & HES). On scheduled 1/2 days of school, the afternoon program begins at 12:45 PM and ends at 6:00 pm. Children may be registered to attend the afternoon sessions on a part-time or full-time basis. A special vacation child care program is offered on most school holidays and vacations (Veteran's Day, February and April Vacations). The program does not meet on days when school is delayed, canceled or dismissed early due to weather or other circumstances.

The program curriculum is realistic and diversified. The types of activities offered include: arts and crafts, organized sports and games, free play (indoor and outdoor), homework assistance, computer education, dance, special rainy day activities, and periodic field trips. The curriculum strives to meet the varying needs of the different children and their respective ages.

Registration is restricted to those children attending District #17 Elementary Schools. Those who choose to register on a part-time basis must notify the HK Recreation Department a month in advance and specify what day of the week the child will be attending.

Please note: when the camp goes on their field trips, there is no camp on-site during that time. If your child is enrolled in a sports camp, specialty camp or swim lessons during a camp field trip time - you must choose which program you are going to send them to. If they do not go on the field trip, it is the parents' responsibility to transport their child to the program as there will be no one at camp during that time.

Did you know......

If your child is signed up for Summer Camp and is registered to participate in any of our other programs held at the HS Complex such as swim lessons or a Sports Camp, we will walk them to and from the program! Please indicate on the
registration form what other programs they are registered for.

Campers can sign-up for swim lessons during camp from 10:40 - 11:20 am and we will walk them there. See our Aquatic page for more info. Please fill out our regular Registration Form.

Important Information

  1. Each camper will be receiving one camp T-shirt to be worn on all field trips. This will allow for easier identification of our group. Shirts will be a different color this year.

  2. Please pack a daily lunch unless informed of a different arrangement. We do not have a refrigerator or microwave available so please pack "picnic style" lunches complete with an icepack. It gets HOT!

  3. Please send your child with sneakers everyday. This is an important safety issue - sandals, flip-flops, & open toe shoes are not allowed. Label all items brought to camp - clothes, towels, swimsuits, lunch boxes. Items left behind will be put in the camp lost and found until September 10th.

  4. We strongly encourage parents to provide sunscreen. Send a bottle clearly labeled with your child's name. Leave one note for the whole season requesting sunscreen to be applied as needed.

  5. There are certified lifeguards at the pool during camp hours. Lifeguards call for buddy checks several times during free swim. Camp children may sign up for swim lessons from 10:30 - 11:20 am and we will walk them there. There is a separate registration.

  6. Children are not allowed to bring toys from home (i.e. Nintendo DS, iPods, scooters, etc.) The HK Rec. Dept. is not responsible for lost or stolen toys.

Camp Discounts: Due to the fact that your child will be absent for a short time, there is a $15 / $12 2nd child discount from the Summer Camp if a child attends any of the following sport and specialty camps (must be the same week): Baseball Camp, Basketball Camps, Lacrosse Camp, Golf Camp, Soccer Camp, Track & Field Camp, Volleyball Camp, Flag Football, Gymnastics Camp, Sports from Around the World Camp, Kid's Boot Camp, Mad Science Camps, Computer Education Camps, Choral Camp, LEGO Engineering Camps, Performing Arts Camp. Campers must choose between attending the Field Trip or attending the Specialty / Sport Camp. There will be no summer camp on-site during Field Trip hours.

Fee includes: All camp fees include field trip admissions, busing, and 1 camp T-shirt. Recreation Scholarships are available for families in need. Call for more information!

Health Record & Photo Policy: A copy of your child's health record from your physician must accompany the completed camp registration form (unless we have a copy on-file from previous years if your child attended our camp in grades 1 - 6). We will need an updated copy for campers entering 7th grade. Any incomplete registrations not containing camp registration form, health record, and payment will be returned. Schools are not allowed to fax forms to us. For safety purposes, a photograph of your child is required. Please include with your registration.

Health Exam/Record click here to download

Please sign up early! Any registrations received after 6:00 pm on the Wednesday preceding the week you wish your child to attend will be subject to a $25 late fee! Any registrations received on a Monday morning for that same week will be subject to a $35 late fee!
