Imagination Stations

This program offers the opportunity to meet other parents and toddlers in a playgroup atmosphere. Parents will help their toddlers explore the different stations such as free play, puppets, drama, crafts, stories, and more. There will be time for parents to discuss different toddler issues as well. What a great social experience for both you and your toddler!

Lets Get Dirty - Fall Theme

Let's Put on a Play!

“Creative enrichment through storytelling and music”
Storyteller and guitarist, Judy Potter, invites your children up to the “stage” to “pretend” (act out) the story they’ve just heard. Music, singing and audience participation are woven into each play, and children have an opportunity at the end of the “performance” to come up and strum Judy’s guitar for the ending sing-a-long. Bring your clapping hands and imaginations and come join the fun!

Young Chefs of HK

Young Chefs is a unique culinary experience which will offer cooking classes to children in a safe environment that will encourage discovery and creativity. Each visit will be a new experience with fresh monthly themes and exciting new programs. Students sharpen their skills by employing the mantra, "Mise en Place" which, in the cooking world, translates into "Everything in its place." Young chefs will learn basics in kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking and baking techniques, presentation, and so much more! At the end of each workshop the young chef will leave with a packet of info on how to recreate what we made in class and tasty treats for their family to try.
Workshops include:

Session 1: September 21 - Get a head start back to school and learn all about great after school energy snacks. Learn how to make delicious home-made granola bars and beautiful fruit and cheese kabobs.
Session 2: October 26 - Gear up for ghosts, goblins and ghouls! We will be working with fondant this month and make some spooky holiday decorations to top cupcakes with.
Session 3: November 16 - Get ready for Thanksgiving and make turkey cookie treats. We will start the class by making pita pizzas and while they bake, we will create delicious edible turkeys.

- join Bernoulli and Newton as we take this exciting look at the science behind aerodynamics and the properties of air... under pressure. Use a vortex generator to create air pockets with a punch, and levitate ping-pong balls in defiance of gravity!
Che-mystery - Eliminate the mystery in chemistry! Explore one of the most exciting and fundamental sciences as you grow a crazy crystal garden and make your own “chemical” soda pop!
Fun-damental Forces - Gravity... Inertia...Centripetal force... who could ever imagine that an introduction to physics could be so much fun? We’ll experience these awesome forces for ourselves and build some cool devices to watch them at work!
Science of Magic - Magic? No... It’s science! You’ll learn the secrets behind famous magic tricks that you can recreate for yourself! Mother Nature has some tricks of her own, and we’d like to show you what’s up her sleeve!
Stunt Planes & Gliders - The Wright Brothers would be proud as we follow in their footsteps and learn the fundamental principles of flight. Build a “football” glider, control surfaces and your very own loop-flying stunt plane. You’ll be a Top Gun after this class!
Super Structures - Discover the strengths of triangles, cylinders and arches. Learn how combinations of these shapes make for sturdy homes and skyscrapers! Use teamwork to build your own super structures as well as an earthquake-proof building!

Karate Kids

Meet friends and build self-esteem while learning the meaning of respect, self-discipline, concentration, and self-control. Students will be introduced to Washin-Ryu Karate-Do, a unique form of traditional Japanese Karate. Mr. Moan will also talk to the kids about safety awareness and how to avoid abductions.

Learn five magic tricks from Tom O'Brien, a professional magician, whose credits also include appearances on the Fox 61 Morning Show and WFSB's Better Connecticut. Tom is a master at his craft and is a wonderful and entertaining teacher as well. All students will receive their own magic kits containing the props necessary to perform them at home, and a magic wand!

Cheerleading

Play-Well LEGO Engineering FUNdamentals

Explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. Design and build motorized machines, catapults, demolition derby cars, trucks and suspension bridges, buildings and other constructions. Includes directed projects with instruction, performance-oriented projects with guidance, and free-building time to construct that "really great project" with huge quantities of LEGOSTM. This is a fun, challenging, hands-on, and minds-on class suitable for LEGOTM novices to "maniacs."

The Children’s Music Workshop was designed to introduce children to the basics of music such as singing in tune and performing correct rhythm by using games, a variety of instruments, dance and songs. Fischer Music School instructors believe that all children have great musical capabilities and when exposed to music education at an early age, children can be inspired to take their musical gifts to a higher level. Kids will participate in jam sessions, sing, make music with egg shakers and kazoos, hear lots of live guitar and saxophone, dance, play the tambourine, learn about basic music notation, watch slide shows, and have plenty of silly fun!

Horseback Riding

Fall is a perfect season to go horseback riding. This beginner horseback riding class will cover grooming, saddling, riding, safety skills, as well as fun games. Lessons are geared for the novice rider, but students with experience are welcome too. English saddles will be used. All equipment will be provided, including helmet. The facillity is lighted. Babysitter's Training Program

Learn how to become a safe and responsible babysitter! This American Red Cross Program has been updated to include Basic Child Care, First Aid for breathing and bleeding emergencies, and injury prevention as well as covering other important topics to prepare young adults for babysitting. This class is an excellent opportunity to help students build self-confidence as well as job leadership and decision-making skills. Completion of the course will give students the opportunity to add their names to the HK Recreation Dept.Ős Babysitting Referral List. Fee includes an American Red Cross Babysitting Manual & Certificate.

Archery


Archery teaches patience, concentration, and attention to detail. Being an individual sport, children will learn and have fun at their own pace. Students will enjoy shooting bows while learning the history of archery and the proper terminology that goes with the sport. Classes are taught with emphasis on safety and proper technique. There will also be a "Carnival Day" where the class will have the chance to play "archery games" and win prizes. Individual equipment (bows, arrows, armguards) is provided.

Fencing


With a rich tradition dating back hundreds of years, fencing is an Olympic sport that helps develop both large and fine motor skills. It encourages strategic thinking as well as physical development. Using the foil as the introductory weapon, students will learn proper technique for basic footwork & handwork as well as simple attack, and defense techniques. There will be a combination of personal & group instruction, as well as partner drills. Equipment will be supplied with an emphasis on the proper and responsible use of weapons and protective gear. Electrical scoring equipment will also be introduced for the advanced class. Wear good sneakers, t-shirt & sweatpants.

Team Fencing

Participants will be given the opportunity to participate in a non-traditional team sport. Beginners and experienced fencers will meet twice a week to develop and fine tune the offensive and defensive skills necessary to succeed in fencing. Strategic thinking and physical conditioning will be integrated through group and individual drills, lessons and bouting. Participation in this program will lead to the opportunity to compete in the Connecticut High School Novis Tournament. In future years, students will have the options to compete in other Connecticut and United States Fencing Association tournaments. Students will need to purchase basic equipment plus electric scoring equipment if students choose to compete in tournaments.

OPTION 1 (Full Course) - includes 30 hours of classroom which includes the safe driving, drug and alcohol program, plus 8 hours of behind-the-wheel. Most insurance companies offer a discount if you take this full course. Driving sessions will be scheduled by the instructor. Dates listed are classroom only. Fee: $475 (non-residents add $10)

OPTION 2 (Classroom - No Driving)
- includes 30 hours of classroom which includes the safe driving, drug and alcohol program. No behind-the-wheel.
Fee: $250 (non-residents add $10)

OPTION 3 (Safe Driving/Drug & Alcohol Program) - this 8-hr course fulfills the mandatory requirement of the State of CT for license applicants who choose a Home Training Program. Required for all drivers, including those over 18. Fee: $125

Parent/Student Informational Class:
Thursday, September 15th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm
All parents of students who are under the age of 18 and student drivers must attend orientation in the HK HS Seminar Room. Students will not receive a certificate unless they, as well as at least one parent, attend this 2-hr. class.
