Tiny Hawks Sports Camp

This program was developed to help children fine tune motor skills through various sporting activities and games. Skyhawks goal is to introduce general concepts and skills needed for sports and life such as hand-eye coordination, foot-eye coordination, teamwork, cooperation, sportsmanship, & balance. There is no pressure, just lots of fun while learning the basics of soccer and basketball through unique age-appropriate games and equipment. The coaching staff is trained to meet the special needs of young children and is committed to creating a positive introduction to sports. Parent involvement is not required, but is certainly welcome. Children must be potty-trained (no pull-ups please). Participant-to-coach ratio is 6:1. Participants must bring shinguards, water bottle, sneakers, & sunscreen (put on by parent). Please label everything.

Gymnastics Camp - Pre-school


Students will be introduced to basic floor tumbling as well as some apparatus use. Participants will work on front rolls, back rolls, cartwheels, handstands and bridges. They will learn to walk front and back on the balance beam as well as hops, skips and little jumps.

Computertots!

I:
From Legs to Wings and Back Again (9:00 - 10:00 am) - Children will enjoy this hands-on insect building with a twist of computer exploration. Children will experiment with a digital microscope, play games, create and take home art projects. Please bring in a sealed bag of a nature item (twig, bug, rock, feather etc.).

II: Basics to Building (10:00 - 11:00 am) - Young children love to build - & building is a great way to enter the world of engineering! Our hands-on exploration of simple machines introduces the basic concept of physical science & engineering.

III: Window Clings (11:00 - 12:00 pm) - Students will use clip art and their own drawings on the computer to create images and then print them on special paper to take home! Art projects and computer usage are included.

The CT Audubon Society will be bringing their program to us. Children will learn about the different animals or species and even get to look at and touch some of the live animals.The Animals workshop will feature a variety of the center's most popular animals (bunnies, chinchillas, birds and insects) and what makes them special. The Reptiles workshop will feature snakes, lizards, & turtles, each unique in their own way.

Karate Kids

Children will have the opportunity to meet friends and build self-esteem while learning the meaning of self-respect, respect for others, self-discipline, concentration, and self-control. Students will be introduced to Washin-Ryu Karate-Do, a unique form of traditional Japanese Karate.

3 v 3 Soccer Mini-Tournaments

MLS Summer Soccer Fun

Horseback Riding

This beginner horseback riding class will cover grooming, saddling, riding, safety skills, as well as fun games. Lessons are geared for the novice rider. All equipment will be provided. Babysitter's Training Program


Learn how to become a safe and responsible babysitter! Basic Child Care, First Aid, and injury prevention as well as other important topics to prepare young adults for babysitting will be discussed. An excellent opportunity to help build self-confidence as well as job leadership and decision-making skills. Upon completion, students will have the opportunity to add their names to the HK Rec. Dept.’s Babysitting Referral List. Fee includes a Red Cross Babysitting Manual & certificate.

Archery

Archery teaches patience, concentration and attention to detail. Being an individual sport, children will learn and have fun at their own pace. Safety and proper technique will be emphasized. There will be a "Carnival Day" where the class will have the chance to play "archery games" and win prizes. Individual equipment (bows, arrows, armguards) is provided.

Designed for those who need to work on the fundamentals of the swing. Class will cover the full swing, approach shots and the short game, as well as strategy, etiquette and the rules of the game. More advanced techniques will be covered for those who have taken class before. Includes use of clubs.

Crossroads Driving School

I: 38-hour Program -
this course includes 30 hours of classroom plus the safe driving and alcohol program along with 8 hours of behind-the-wheel.
II: Safe Driving and Drug and Alcohol Program -
this 8-hour course fulfills the requirement of the State of CT for license applicants under 18 who choose a Home Training Program. Please note, students must attend all classes. There will be one make-up day (same times) on the Friday of the last week of classes.

Creative Writing Workshop

If you love to write, this is the workshop for you! This workshop is designed for students who are serious about creative writing and who are eager to refine their literary voice. We will write fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction, and also seek inspiration in the work of great writers. At the end of the week, we will publish a journal of everyone's best work. Please bring a notebook and your favorite pen or pencil. Come enjoy this week of creativity, sharing, and fun!

Tennis Fundamentals

Tennis is a game that has been played for many years and is a sport that you can enjoy your whole life. Participants will learn the fundamentals of tennis such as the forehand, backhand, volley, lobs, and the serve. Basic playing strategies will also be discussed. Coach Pakus was the USTA - New England Region 2003 High School Coach of the Year. Please bring a racquet, water, and wear sneakers. Don't forget to put sunscreen on before class.

Kid's Entertainment Extravaganza

The HK Recreation Department has booked some funtastic shows. Tickets are $2 and will be sold at the door. Children enrolled in our summer camp that week will be attending the show free of charge. All shows are at the HK HS Auditorium.

Bubble-Mania - Wednesday, July 9th from 10:00 - 10:45 am
Casey Carle provides an extremely unique program combining high energy entertainment with artistic achievement. BubbleMania is loaded with visual comedy, quick wit, big band swing music and the untamed, often unbelievable qualities and beauty of spherical liquids. Casey's creations grow from intricate and imaginative bubble artforms to "trapping" people inside bubbles! This show is geared to participants ages 5 - Adult.

World Class Frisbee Show - Wednesday, July 23rd from 10 - 10:45 am
World Frisbee Champion Todd Brodeur will dazzle us with everything you need to know about frisbees. He will show easy tricks and catches as well as more difficult moves and combinations. A brief history of how frisbees got their name will also be talked about.

Motion 360 - Wednesday, July 30th from 10 - 10:55 am
Motion 360 is a fast paced physical tour-de-force in dance theater. Using objects that range from the specialized (stilts and masks), to the ordinary (roller blades and chairs), Tim Latta demonstrates how we can literally stumble over everyday objects to unlock our creativity. Motion 360 is designed to inspire young people to explore their own potential. This is a one man show that is powerful, hilarious, touching, awe-inspiring, magical and entertaining.

Design and build your own rocket, then launch it with compressed air! This course will demonstrate the basics of aeronautics and give the child a feel for rockets. You’ll have a blast! Each child needs to supply their own 22 oz empty soda bottle.

NEW! Camp Scene Investigators (Gr. 6-8)

Broken glass…papers strewn about…a muddy footprint…a missing computer. The scene is set for “The Case of the Crooked Camper!” Over the weekend, someone has broken into the camp office and made off with the computer full of camper information. Now it is up to our crack team of Camp Scene Investigators to follow the clues, gather evidence, and ultimately, identify the crook Throughout the week, our CSI team will collect evidence, examine fingerprints and foot castings, learn forensic techniques, take photographs, interview suspects and present their findings.

Performing Arts Camp:Acting, Singing, Dancing


This is an intensive, fun, highly charged program for the young drama, dance & singing enthusiasts. Some of the topics/activities include musical theater dance routines, theater games, acting terminology, improvisational exercises, concentration exercises, voice and speech, sense memory subtext, stage skills and script work. For the more experienced performers, there will be more challenging, new and exciting activities. The program concludes with a performance on the last day!

NEW! Play-Well LEGOTM Engineering

I: Pre-Engineering (ages 5-6) - usng LEGOS TM, kids will create, play, and learn. Build a town, city, or star base with houses, buildings, pyramids, bridges, tunnels, towers, and more. Build motorized cars, trains, buses and trucks; race them, crash them, repair them. Explore the many possibilities of LEGOTM building systems while learning useful construction techniques.
II: Engineering FUNdamentals (ages 7-9) - using LEGOTM kids will explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. Learn how to design and build motorized machines, catapults, demolition derby cars, trucks and suspension bridges, buildings and other constructions. Each session will include directed projects with instruction, performance-oriented projects with guidance, and free-building time to construct that "really great project" with huge quantities of LEGOSTM. This is a fun, challenging, hands-on, and minds-on camp suitable for LEGOTM novices to "maniacs."
